FAQs (Frequently asked questions)
ADMINISTRATOR CONSOLE
I switched from a user with limited rights to an administrator and double clicked the tray icon. Vise™ reported that I had to be logged on as an administrator to be able to start the administrator’s console.
Or:
I switched from a user with limited rights to an administrator and double clicked the tray icon. Next, the user console started instead of the administrator console.
Vise™ needs a few seconds when changing users (and, therefore, profiles) to ‘switch over’. First the critical issues such as security settings are activated or deactivated. The less critical issues, such as the shortcut to the tray icon, take place as last and this means that this may for a very short while still reference the ‘other' console. When you try again you will see that the correct software is started.
BLOCKING FTP
How can I block FTP access?
Block ports 20 and 21.
BLOCKING SITES
How is it possible that a website is sometimes blocked and at other times it is not?
Many websites have variable content, for example, because they contain ads. Often other ads are displayed when the page is refreshed and Vise™ may react to the text of the ads.
VISE™ has identified a breach but I can still see parts of the website.
A website as you view it is often not a full block of information; information is retrieved from different locations and merged. Each of these sections may activate a prohibition rule of VISE™. The sections that ‘may’ be displayed.
Why are sometimes breaches shown more than once when visiting a website?
A website as you view it is often not a full block of information; information is retrieved from different locations and merged. Each of these sections may activate a prohibition rule of VISE™.
I have approved a request for a website as the administrator but it is blocked anyway.
A website as you view it is often not a full block of information; information is retrieved from different locations and merged. These sections may activate a prohibition rule of VISE™. You have approved the section concerned on the administrator’s console. If, next, there are more sections that breach (the same or other) rules, VISE™ will again block the page when you visit the website for a second time.
INSTALLATION
Under which operating systems can Vise™ be installed?
Vise™ runs under Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or higher) and Windows Vista on standalone machines. Vise™ has not been tested on 64-bits Windows Vista.
Can I install Vise™ on more than one computer?
That depends on your license. Most people will have a 2-computer license.
MESSENGER SERVICE
What is the Messenger Service?
This is not the instant messaging client Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. It is part of the Windows system that is often used in business networks. This system is often abused by spammers or phishers to display messages on your screen; usually ads or empty threats. Messenger Service is no longer available on Windows Vista.
I want to allow Messenger Service and have, therefore, removed the checkmark from the deactivate Windows Messenger Service box. And yet the Messenger Service does not work.
Windows services have three ‘start types’: manual, automatic, and disabled. If the service has been disabled, you cannot switch it on or off. Therefore, first set the service to manual: Click My Computer followed by Manage, Services and Applications and Services using the right mouse button. Next, click Messenger Service using the right mouse button, select Properties and set the Startup Type to manual. You can now also immediately activate the service by clicking it again using the right mouse button and clicking Start (this ensures that you do not have to do this from the Vise™ administrator’s console).
